Where can i get a card for my son? I've seen commercials on some cards where you just add funds at the store and the card can be used almost everywhere, even online. Any idea what card(s) would be good for my teenage son?

I really dont recommend these. There's a monthly fee involved and a reload fee. You have a checking account right? Do you like using your debit card? Imagine a monthly fee just for a debit card AND a FEE to DEPOSIT your own money! Those cards are ridiculous.

Do you have a low-limit Visa/MasterCard you can authorize your son on? That would be the best bet in my opinion. Adding your son as an authorized user will also help build his credit, since cards he's authorized on report to the credit bureaus! So basically he can inherit your good credit.

Talk to your bank about setting up a joint checking/savings account, with you and your son as account-holders. Most of them come with an ATM card, and most ATM cards are now associated with either Visa or MasterCard, so they can be used wherever those cards are accepted. As a joint account, you can always add money, AND you can keep track of what's going on with it because you can see the statements to see if he's going over balance, etc.

This way you'll accomplish everything you need and not have to pay any exorbitant fees. Monthly checking account fees may be necessary, but are often waived if you maintain a specified minimum balance and/or make automatic deposits, a specific number of transactions, etc. Generally the requirements to avoid monthly fees aren't too difficult.
